Firefighter's Chili and Cheese Stuffed Waffle

Prepare waffle batter as directed. Preheat Stuffler® stuffed waffle maker with waffle tongs in unit for 10 minutes.

Spread about 1/3 cup batter into waffle maker so bottom grids and waffle divider are thinly but completely covered. Place one slice of cheese onto batter. Spread chili on top of cheese leaving a thin margin around edge. Top with remaining cheese slice. Spread additional batter over filling until it reaches the top of the square projections on the waffle tongs. Close waffle maker and flip. Cook for 7 to 8 minutes. Remove stuffed waffle to plate.

Variation: Commercially prepared chili can be substituted for Firefighter's Chili.

*Waffle, pancake, or all-purpose baking mixes can be substituted for Savory Waffle Batter recipe. Prepare as directed on package. Add 1/4 cup sliced green onions to batter. Yield may vary depending on mix used.

  Firefighter's Chili  (recipe makes about 14 stuffed waffles) 

• 8 ounces ground mild or hot Italian sausage
• 8 ounces lean ground beef
• 1/3 cup chopped onion
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 (14 1/2-ounce) cans diced tomatoes
• 1 (15-ounce) can pinto beans, drained
• 1/2 cup dry red wine
• 1/2 cup beef broth
• 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
• 2 to 3 tablespoons chili powder
• 1 tablespoon honey
• 1/4 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
• 1/4 teaspoon celery seed
• 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
• Salt and pepper

Preheat Presto® Electric Skillet at 350°. Add sausage and ground beef. Cook until browned. Remove from skillet. Pour off excess drippings, reserving 1 tablespoon in skillet. Add onion and garlic; sauté 1 minute. Return sausage and ground beef to skillet and add remaining ingredients except salt and pepper.

Heat until boiling. reduce heat to simmer, between Warm and 200°, cook covered to desired consistency, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Firefighter's Chili makes enough for about 14 stuffed waffles. Refrigerate for later use with stuffed waffles or enjoy separately.
