Heat Source

Acceptable Heat Sources:
  • All stovetop Presto® Pressure Canners work on electric coil and regular gas ranges.
  • Current models also work on glass/smooth-top ranges. Check your range’s manual for weight limits, as a full canner can exceed 50 pounds.
  • The Presto® Induction Compatible Pressure Canner with stainless steel-clad base (Stock No. 01784) works on induction, smooth-top, electric coil, and regular gas ranges.
Tips for glass/smooth-top and induction ranges:
  • Use an element that closely matches the canner’s 8- to 9-inch base.
  • Do not place across two elements.
  • Never let the canner boil dry.
  • Avoid hours-long use on a single element.
  • Prevent scratches: keep the canner base smooth/clean and avoid sliding it.
  • Clean cooktop before and after use with a cooktop polishing cream.
  • A portable induction cooktop may be used if it is at least 1800 watts, has an 8- to 10-inch heating zone, and supports 50 pounds.
Not Acceptable:
  • Except for Stock No. 01784, standard Presto® Pressure Canners do not work on induction ranges (due to aluminum construction).
  • Do not use on outdoor LP gas burners or gas ranges over 12,000 BTUs—excess heat may damage the canner and pose safety risks.
Limitations of portable cooktops:
  • Many portable induction units lack sufficient wattage or load capacity for a full canner (50+ pounds). Check the manual.
  • Electric hot plates typically cannot maintain the required heat for boiling water canning or pressure canning.
Alternative:

Presto Precise® Digital Pressure Canners, Stock Nos. 02144, 02152, 02153, and 02154 are electric pressure canners and therefore require no external heat source.
